How We Keep Every Mystery Shopping Report Accurate

Every report passes through several layers of checks before it reaches you. Here's how our quality control works.

A mystery shopping program is only as useful as the reports behind it. If a visit didn't happen as described, the decisions built on it can be wrong. That's why every Shoppers Confidential report passes through several layers of checks before it reaches you. Since 2005, we've refined a quality control process that combines the right shoppers, verifiable evidence, technology and experienced human reviewers. Here's how it works.

Our quality control process

  1. The right shopper for each program. Every shopper must pass our general skills certification with a score of 100% before taking any assignment. Where a program requires it, shoppers also earn a program-specific certification, so each visit is done by someone who understands your brand standards.
  2. Rotation set to your goals. Our shopper profile system applies the rotation rules set for your program. Some clients want a variety of shoppers for fresh perspectives; others want repeat visits to measure improvement over time.
  3. Photo evidence that can be verified. Shoppers submit geotagged, time-stamped photos. GPS data, photo dates, and upload dates are automatically checked and then reviewed by a person to confirm the visit happened where and when it was reported.
  4. Receipts matched to the visit. When a purchase is part of the visit, a receipt is required and checked against the location, date and time.
  5. An AI review of every report. Each report gets an initial AI review that flags missing information and signs of AI-generated writing. Submitted photos are also screened for AI-generated images, a check we continue to improve.
  6. A final review by a human validator. An experienced validator then reviews every report for accuracy, clarity and completeness before it's released to you.

All of our mystery shoppers are independent contractors bound by non-disclosure agreements, so your program details stay confidential.

What this means for you

  • Results you can act on. Every report is checked before it reaches you, so you can coach your teams with confidence.
  • Fair to your staff. Verified evidence and consistent standards mean feedback reflects what actually happened. That keeps the focus on coaching and on recognizing great service with rewards and praise, not on catching people out.
  • English and French coverage. Programs can be delivered in English and Canadian French across Canada and in the United States.
  • Everything in one place. Validated reports, photos, audio and video recordings, and trends are all available in your online reporting portal.
  • Industry standards. We're a member of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) Americas and have earned MSPA Elite status for 2027.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know a mystery shop actually happened?

Every visit is backed by geotagged, time-stamped photos, plus a receipt when a purchase is required. GPS data, photo dates and upload dates are checked automatically and by a person, and receipts are matched to the location, date and time of the visit.

How do you choose which mystery shopper visits my business?

Every shopper must pass our general skills certification with a score of 100% and earn a program-specific certification when required by your program. Rotation rules are set for each client's goals: some want a variety of shoppers for fresh perspectives, others want repeat visits to measure improvement.

Are your mystery shoppers employees?

No. Our mystery shoppers are independent contractors. Every shopper is bound by a non-disclosure agreement that requires them to keep client programs confidential.

Do you use AI to review mystery shopping reports?

Yes, as a first check. AI flags missing information and possible AI-generated writing. A trained human validator then reviews every report before it's released.

Can you run mystery shopping programs in French?

Yes. We deliver programs, shopper recruiting and reporting in both English and French across Canada.

What happens if a report doesn't meet your standards?

Every report passes our quality checks before it's released to you. If a report still doesn't meet your standards, let us know within 14 days of receiving it, and we'll follow up with the shopper to clarify it or replace it. That's our Happiness Promise.
